Manchester United moved into second in the Premier League as Anthony Martial’s debut goal helped inflict a first away defeat of the season on Liverpool.

After a drab opening half, Daley Blind shot into the top corner from 16 yards as Juan Mata squared a free kick.

Ander Herrera doubled the lead from the penalty spot, before Christian Benteke’s spectacular overhead kick pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Martial, a £36m signing, coolly finished after beating Martin Skrtel.

United keeper David de Gea, making his first start of the season, had earlier saved Danny Ings’s volley while Blind cleared Skrtel’s header off the line.
